Life is Too Short to Waste Away In a 9–5 You Don’t Enjoy (Just For ‘Good Money’)

On one of the first dates between Phil Knight and his later-to-be-wife, she asked him about his current accountant job. His response gave me chills and serves as a backdrop for my pursuit of writing for a living.

“I wanted what everyone wants. To be me, full-time.”

Don’t settle. It’s not worth it.

What you do for a living, how you spend your days, and what you pursue is deeply personal.

Yet, I see a camp that views their job for what it is: just a job. Something providing their life with money, perhaps even ‘good money,’ for a portion of their time.

Others are labeled ‘dreamers,’ ‘weird,’ ‘risk takers,’ or even ‘delusional.’

You seek meaning and purpose from your days, which you should never apologize for. You don’t need to quit your job, ‘burn the ships’ or ‘go all in.’

But you’d be wise to get honest about your future, what you want, and whether you can keep showing up to something you don’t feel too strongly about.

Life is meant to be experienced, not survived.

So if you don’t think you want to do what you’re doing forever, consider starting a little project that gets you excited.

See where it goes.

Remember, Phil Knight started selling shoes in his parent’s basement because he didn’t want a boss.

Don’t be afraid to be a Rebel!
