Writing is hard.

You decide you want to write something. You have an idea. You go sit down and place your fingers on the keyboard to begin your greatness…then, suddenly, you realize the pathetic fraud that you are, and everything you thought was so brilliant seems so foolish.

Sound familiar?

It’s part of the game. You think you’re brilliant. Then you convince yourself you know nothing at all.

What makes writing so damn hard is not ordering words or endless edits or the repositioning of words. Nope. That seems easy compared to the most challenging element of writing.

Getting out of your head, convincing yourself to start, showing up, doing the work, and allowing yourself to sit down and bleed, as Hemingway said. That’s the hard part. That’s the part that holds you back if you let it. Humbles you if you respect it, paralyzes you when you aren’t right.

I still struggle with it. In many ways, I expect I always will. But, learning how to ignore the Resistance and be a professional like Steven Pressfield would tell us is far more important than letting my tiny ego get its feelings hurt.
