It won’t be easy, but worth the journey.
It had been less than 2 minutes, and I was already out of breath, calves tightening, and I thought my chest was about to explode.
It was a beautiful Good Friday, and I was excited to start working out again. Following a workout in the gym, I would run the mile home like the graceful athlete I once was. It’s just running, right? I’ve been running all my life.
Yes, well, kind of, but those days were about 60 lbs, several hundreds of cheeseburgers, and perhaps a few beers ago.
The beautiful Friday afternoon suddenly turned into a bright, hot, and treacherous day to be running. In less than 2 minutes, I had gone from being determined to retain the athletic prowess of my youth to just hoping to make it home without having to call my wife for a ride. Grasping for air as I experienced a sensation, which I assume is similar to having an elephant stand on your chest, removes your ambition quickly.
I determined I was mildly out of shape.
I slightly overestimated my ability to start running and underestimated the length from the gym to my house, which now felt like a trek up Mount Everest.
