1 Habit Almost All Successful Writers Have In Common
Most successful writers share the same handful of things in common:
- They are disciplined with their time
- They know how to stay focused on one goal at a time
- They have mentors and other influential people they can turn to for advice
- They have mastered the art of storytelling
But in writing in particular, I have noticed that the most successful have this 1 habit in common:
Willingness to Trust Their Instinct, Even If They Fail
And here’s why:
You don’t know what you don’t know.
But as a writer, you have to start somewhere. You have to put things out in public — good or bad. You must be willing to put an idea — even half-baked sometimes — out into the world and see what happens.
This is excruciating.
Every job in the world takes some level of willingness to fail. But something about sending something out on the internet, with the potential of millions of eyes landing on it, is beyond intimidating to our fragile ego.
“This is stupid, it will never work,” or “Nobody is going to read this,” or “I’m just embarrassing myself by even publishing this.”
All these excuses are easy to latch onto and depend upon to avoid what’s really at stake: we might fall flat on our faces.
And you will…even if you’re destined to be the world’s greatest writer. You will write something that will be a colossal failure.
But, if you bravely published it, heard the crickets, and still showed up again the next day…you got a little closer to getting better.
And that’s half the battle in this game.
